Exploring the Wonders of the Pelagic Zone

Exploring the Wonders of the Pelagic Zone

The open ocean presents a vastly different world compared to the ocean floor. Here, the endless blue extends in every direction, with the dark abyss looming below. Currents are stronger, shelter is scarce, and food is limited. Yet, an array of life has found ways to thrive, from the surface down to the abyss, using unexpected adaptations to conquer the challenges of the open sea.

We begin our exploration at the high seas' surface, the richest zone. Whales glide through the waves, dolphins ride the currents, and a variety of pelagic creatures feed at the surface. The secret to this abundance is sunlight, as this is the photic zone, also known as the epipelagic or sunlight zone. Sunlight penetrates up to 200 meters, allowing phytoplankton to photosynthesize and sustain life in the upper water column.
