Before the nation of England took shape, its north was a battleground of kingdoms. Bernicia and Deira emerged through conflict, forming Northumbria—a land of warrior kings, ancient halls, sacred islands, and golden monasteries. Under leaders like Edwin, Oswald, and Oswiu, Northumbria became a powerhouse in Britain, but internal strife and external threats led to its decline. In 865, the legendary Viking Great Heathen Army, led by figures such as Halfdan Ragnarsson, invaded, toppling kingdoms and seizing York to establish a new Viking realm.

Meanwhile, across the Irish Sea, the Uí Ímair dynasty of Dublin sought power over Dublin and York, linking Ireland and Northumbria in a cross-sea power struggle. In the south, Alfred the Great's descendants, including Edward the Elder and Æthelflæd, challenged the Danelaw's hold. Æthelstan eventually marched north to unite England under one crown. After his death, Viking rulers returned, and his successors, Edmund and Eadred, fought to maintain the unified kingdom. Eric Bloodaxe's reign marked the end of Viking rule in York and an era in history.
